The Rocky Knob Lodge, located near the Idaho-Montana border in Conner, Montana, has been a fixture in the southern Bitterroot since it was built back in 1947 by Jessie “Ptomaine Joe” White. Joe managed the construction of the first lodge, now the Guide Room, by trading food, drink and “favors” from the staff. Years later she built out the main room that still features the original cat walk used during the Knob’s tenure as a brothel. The Rocky Knob changed hands in the 50s and the bar addition was built in 1972. Over the years the restaurant has had a series of colorful owners, including the Wetzsteon family who settled much of Sula in 1880. The Rocky Knob was closed in 2018 and was overhauled by the new owners Bob and Karen (Wetzsteon) Fifield both born in the Bitterroot, and Kate and Rob Cleveland who arrived in the valley just a decade ago. The reopening in 2025 brings back a storied place where fishermen, hunters, skiers, travelers and local friends can all sit side by side in a historic part of the Bitteroot Valley.
